AUGUSTA — Maine Department of Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen will launch the birth-to-adult literacy initiative, “Literacy for ME” Tuesday in Lewiston.
Bowen and Lee Anne Larsen, literacy specialist for the Maine DOE, and school and community participants will introduce the initiative at 1 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St.
Goals of “Literacy for ME” are to help all Maine residents meet literacy demands of the 21st century, inform state-level literacy education efforts, and provide help to local communities, according to a Department of Education news release.
“Literacy for ME” was developed collaboratively by experts across the state. To help raise awareness of the initiative, the Maine Department of Education will hold six more meetings throughout Maine through Sept. 28. Parents, educators and the general public are encouraged to attend.
