Kelton Cullenberg of Chesterville couldn’t have started his cross country season at the University of Maine any better.

Cullenberg, a junior out of Mt. Blue High School, won a Sept. 8 race at the University of Massachusetts. He completed the course in 18 minutes, 20.54 seconds.

He backed it up with a fourth-place finish Friday in a large meet at New Hampshire.

THEIR DEFENSE NEVER RESTS

Three local products — two players and one coach — have been instrumental in an impressive start for the Saint Joseph’s College field hockey team.

Junior Carley Denis of Lewiston and freshman Kayla Royer of Greene (Leavitt) have started all four games on defense for the Monks.

St. Joe’s defensive unit has allowed only two goals in that stretch, with the Monks posting three consecutive shutouts against Eastern Connecticut State, Lasell and Anna Maria to open the season.

Also at St. Joe’s, Michelle Oswald of Jay is in her first year as an assistant coach. Oswald, a Mt. Blue graduate, was a four-year starter at the University of New England,

MAN OF HONOR

Faisal Abdillahi of Lewiston, a junior at St. Joe’s, was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honor roll after his first race of the season.

Abdillahi was fifth with a six-kilometer time of 23:07 in a dual meet Sept. 1 at home against the University of New England. It was the second honor roll recognition of Abdillahi’s career.

STREAK IS OVER

Junior wide receiver Ben Foss of Wales (Oak Hill) was Husson’s leading receiver with three catches for 33 yards Saturday in a 28-22 football victory over Anna Maria.

The win was Husson’s first since 2010. The Eagles prevailed on a 75-yard touchdown run by Ryan Dorso with under two minutes remaining.

Foss has nine catches for 157 yards in three games.
