LEWISTON — The New York Funk Exchange, a nine-piece original funk/soul band hailing from Brooklyn, N.Y., will return to She Doesn’t Like Guthries on Friday, Oct. 5.

The band with a four-part horn section plays a mix of old school funk, jazz, soul and R&B as heard on its 2009 debut album, “The Funkonomic Stimulus Plan,” featuring legendary bassist Christian McBride.

Lead vocalist Serena Fortier, a Lewiston native, has described the high-energy group’s music this way: “There are no sad songs in funk,” and “Seats are not required for our shows.”

Fellow band members are Ray Holman, drums/vocals; Matt Fox, bass guitar; Jamey Zebrack, keys/vocals; Matty G, guitar; RJ Avallone, trumpet; Mozard Pierre-Jacques, trombone; Mike Farrell, saxophone; and Nick Martino, trumpet.

Since its inception in 2007, the NYFE has played more than 200 live shows across the United States, sharing the stage with artists like Fred Wesley & the New JB’s, Galactic, Topaz, Melvin Seals, Martha and the Vandellas, Eddie Money, Damian Marley and Nas.

After two years on the road promoting “The Funkonomic Stimulus Plan,” the NYFE is preparing to release of its sophomore album this fall .

Besides headlining festivals throughout the Northeast, the NYFE is performing live on radio shows like SiriusXM’s “Ron and Fez Show.” The group also maintains a residency at Club Groove NYC in the West Village of Manhattan.
