SOA at Fort Benning, Ga., is where the U. S. Army trains military personnel from Latin America. The curriculum gives ample attention to dealing with political oppositions. Beginning in 1948 the school, now carrying a different name, has helped prepare more than 65,000 soldiers and police to serve U.S. purposes in their own countries. Many have ended up as dictators, murderers and human rights abusers.
Every year SOA Watch holds a vigil and demonstration outside the Fort Benning gate. More than 250 nonviolent protesters have gone to jail on these occasions. The vigil this year will take place from Nov. 16-18 in Columbus, Ga. Maine people are going.
