PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra invites guests to tap their toes to classic American jazz during its Pops! Concert, “Swingin’ the American Songbook” in early November.

Jazz vocalist Banu Gibson and special guest, tap dancer Jason Rodgers, will join the PSO in this tribute to the musical stylings of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s. The concert will feature classic American hits from popular artists such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Harry Warren and Hoagy Carmichael.

Guest conductor Keito Harada will conduct two performances at 7:30 p.m.  Saturday, Nov. 3, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Merrill Auditorium.

Gibson is one of the few vocalists of her generation to maintain exclusive loyalty to songs of the 1920-1940s. Rather than mimic singers of the past, she mixes fresh renditions of Tin Pan Alley standards and jazz classics. She was honored in 2009 by the Preservation Resource Center for her contributions to music, was a New Orleans Magazine’s 2007 Jazz All Star and is featured in the 2010 New Orleans Magazine as Top Female Achiever.

Harada, a native of Tokyo, is assistant conductor for Arizona Opera, principal guest conductor for the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra and music director for Phoenix Youth Symphony.

For tickets, $20-$65, call 842-0800, log on to www.porttix.com or visit the box office at 20 Myrtle St., noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
