STORRS, Conn. (AP)– State and University of Connecticut police have made dozens of arrests at the school since Spring Weekend began two nights ago, but so far, the celebrants have been relatively peaceful, officials said.

“There hasn’t been anything major. I think the UConn students have been very responsible,” UConn spokeswoman Karen Grava said Saturday.

Most of the arrests were for alcohol violations and disorderly conduct. Campus police say they made 24 arrests overnight. Those were mostly alcohol violations although one person was charged with assaulting a police officer, said Maj. Ron Blicher.

Spring Weekend, the traditional last bash before finals, has a tradition for rowdiness. And sometimes violence.

In 1998, police in riot gear made more than 100 arrests when the celebration turned violent and resulted in nearly $150,000 in property damage. Four years ago about 100 people were arrested, but since then the numbers have declined.

Drunken driving checkpoints were set up around campus and UConn has tried to head off the problems by sponsoring a number of on-campus activities.

Saturday night, usually the busiest of the weekend, featured a concert at Gampel Pavilion. Students were allowed to take one guest and more than 4,000 tickets had been sold by early evening, Grava said.
