LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will offer two dances classes starting Wednesday, Nov. 7. Classes offered will be “Line Dancing for Fun and Fitness” and “Couples Dancing for Beginners” with instructor Al Hipkins.
Line dancing is a great medium-intensity exercise. Each lesson will teach new steps and combinations for dances. No experience necessary; a minimum of eight people is needed to hold classes.
Couples dancing will focus on two-step and waltz. These basic ballroom dances are easy to learn. Lessons will include instruction on leading and following, as well as basic moves to make dancing more enjoyable. This is a low-intensity exercise equivalent to walking. No prior experience necessary; minimum of four couples needed.
Line dancing classes will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m., followed by couples dancing classes from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Both classes are $36 per person.
Hipkins has been dancing and teaching since 1972. Most recently, he has been teaching line dancing at Martel Elementary School and two-step and waltz in private sessions. He is nationally accredited by Callerlab and is the current president of the New England Callers and Teachers Association, a regional organization of folk dance teachers and callers.
To register, call the YWCA at 795-4050.
