100 years ago, 1912
An Auburn man, who attended a dance in Lisbon Saturday night, while running to catch an electric car, fell into the Sabatis stream. People on the car rushed to the banks and made a human chain by which they hauled the man from the water. Those who saw the sight wish it could have happened in the day time before a moving picture machine.

50 years ago, 1962
With a total rainfall of almost three inches of rain Saturday and Sunday, several areas of both Lewiston and Auburn began flooding and numerous washouts resulted. The river flow at Gulf Island Dam reached 18,000 cubic feet a second Sunday night. The major washouts occurred on College Street between Little and Ventura streets. More than 12 inches of water covered that section of road and the section was closed to traffic for more than three hours. At least 10 Auburn washouts were reported. They were on the Bird Hill Road, Hersey Hill Road, Perkins Ridge Road, Spring Road, Libby Road, Highland Corner Road, David Drive, Sherwood Drive, Old Maid Road and Center Street.

25 years ago, 1987
A month after Auburn teachers turned down a move toward merit pay, school administrators and representatives of the teachers’ union are scrambling to find a way to salvage the controversial proposal. According to the Maine Teachers Association, performance-based pay in Auburn was dealt a crushing blow when teachers on Oct. 9 overwhelmingly voted against a new contract for extracurricular work based on the concept.
