LEWISTON — Need a sitter for New Year’s Eve? The staff of the YWCA is volunteering their time to offer an overnight of fun to children ages 6 to 12 years. This fundraising event begins at 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve and continues until the next morning at 8 a.m. after a homemade breakfast.
Children will bring a sleeping bag and pillow and the YWCA provides the rest: playing on the gigantic inflatable float in the swimming pool, playing basketball in the pool plus crafts, games, snacks and more. Cost is $50 per child. Preregistration is required by Dec. 28.
Give the gift of dance. The YWCA is offering line dancing for fun and fitness and two-step and waltz for beginners beginning Wednesday, Jan. 9. Learn to line dance in this medium-intensity exercise program.
Each lesson will teach new steps and combinations for dances. No experience necessary, just a willingness to sweat. This class will be offered every Wednesday night from 6 to 6:45 p.m.
The two-step and waltz class is offered Wednesday nights from 7 to 8:15 p.m. and is designed for beginners wishing to learn basic ballroom dances. Lessons will include instruction on leading and following as well as basic moves. Classes are $36 per person for the six week series.
Tiger Sharks Swim Club continues for another session beginning Jan. 14 through April 3. The club is for youth swimmers interested in a fun and competitive experience. They will learn the basic fundamentals of competitive strokes and being part of a team. The Tiger Sharks will compete in at least two meets, which gives the swimmers a great opportunity to learn about competing as a team. For ages 7 to 14. Cost is $95 for members and nonmembers. Fee includes a team logo swim cap. Practices are every Monday and Wednesday evening.
Puppy Kindergarten comes to the YWCA. Marty Neely, dog trainer and Canine Good Citizen evaluation for the AKC, will join the YWCA beginning Monday, Jan. 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for six weeks with classes that encourage and reinforce good behaviors. The classes are for puppies ages 10 weeks to five months, perfect for that new Christmas puppy, and will help puppies learn the basics: simple cues such as sit, come and stay and basic manners.
Common puppy challenges such as biting, house training and crate training will be addressed as well as an opportunity to socialize with people and their dogs. There will be an opportunity to continue with additional classes. All puppies must have proof of distemper and if over four months, rabies vaccination. Fee is $100.
