OXFORD — An Oxford man was arrested Wednesday night after running from the scene of a car crash on Route 26 near the Norway line.

, 20, of Chesley Lane, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, Oxford police Lt. Michael Ward said. He was booked at the Oxford County Jail in Paris and released on bail later that night.

He “said he panicked, then ran,” Ward said, leaving his 16-year-old passenger in her wrecked 2004 Ford Focus.

Ward said Flanders was driving north on Route 26 and Joanne Rauscher, 62, of Little Deer Isle, off the coast of Maine, turned onto the highway from a side street when the cars collided. Ward said the woman was initially trapped, but managed to get herself out. Neither she nor her dog was hurt.

The department received a call about the accident, which was near Hannaford’s supermarket, and that a driver ran from the scene. A witness followed the driver and reported his whereabouts to police.

Ward said Flanders sprinted down Pottle Road and stopped as he turned onto Webber Brook Road. Chesley Lane is off Webber Brook Road.

“I asked him a couple of questions and placed him under arrest for leaving the scene,” he said.

Oxford officer James Richardson, Paris police Chief Michael Dailey and Oxford Fire and Rescue personnel also responded to the scene.
