Media Women member showcase

THOMASTON — Beatrix Potter, creativity and career transitions will be in the spotlight at the Saturday, Feb. 2, meeting of Maine Media Women at the American Legion Hall in Thomaston. This is the second of the group’s annual Member Showcase meetings, and the speakers will be Emily Lattimore, Carol Jaeger and Nancy Jean.

A Rockland poet, artist and Life Member of MMW, Lattimore will read from Beatrix Potter’s “Roly Poly Pudding” and discuss how childhood stories influence their readers into adulthood. Jaeger, a resident of Round Pond and owner of Salt Bay Art Supply in Damariscotta, will talk about her life-changing career transitions as an employee of Kodak. Nancy Jean, a writer who lives in Bristol, will discuss the value of doing creative work, even if one does not consider her/himself an artist or author.

The meeting will begin at 9:15 a.m. with coffee and networking and programs will begin at 10. Guests are always welcome. Suggested donation is $3 members, $5 guests. Camp Susan Curtis trustees

BRUNSWICK — Parke Burmeister, Esq., assistant vice president and marketing manager for Bangor Savings Bank; Bob Dunfey, executive director of ITNPortland; and Chris Miles, CEO of Alliance Press in Brunswick were recently elected to serve on the board of trustees for the Susan L. Curtis Charitable Foundation/Camp Susan Curtis.

Programs at Camp Susan Curtis in Stoneham serve economically disadvantaged children and youth from across Maine by developing skills like effective communication and problem solving, as well as habits of mind like resilience and motivation. The foundation’s administrative offices are in Portland.

Coordinator for Peace Fair

BRUNSWICK — PeaceWorks is offering a stipend position for a Peace Fair Coordinator for 2013. Working with an experienced volunteer committee, a coordinator will work 10 hours a month in March and April, then 10 hours a week from May 1 to Aug. 3 and facilitate a debriefing meeting later in August.

On Aug. 3, PeaceWorks will present its ninth annual Peace Fair. The theme will be “The Children Ask the World of Us” and from that theme come questions about how we can realize the kind of world that will allow all children to thrive.

Along with this exploration will be a lot of celebration and fun: art and musical activities, a poetry writing workshop, concerts by local musicians and wonderful locally grown and prepared food.

HMS Bohemian commemoration

PORTLAND — A program on “The Sinking of the HMS Bohemian: A Commemoration” will be presented by Matthew Jude Barker at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Maine Irish Heritage Center, corner of State and Gray streets.

On the night of Feb. 22, 1864, the HMS Bohemian sank off Cape Elizabeth, killing 42 passengers, many of whom were Irish emigrants from County Galway. As part of the Maine Irish Heritage Center’s Duchas (Heritage) lecture series, historian and genealogist Matthew Jude Barker will present a talk about the Bohemian and commemorate its sinking by reading the names of the passengers lost in the shipwreck. A reception follows.
