LEWISTON — The Sun Journal has been named the second best daily newspaper in New England in its category by the New England Newspaper & Press Association.

The association’s New England Better Newspaper Competition drew more than 3,000 entries from newspapers throughout New England.

In the general excellence category for newspapers with circulation up to 30,000, the MetroWest Daily News of Framingham, Mass., took top honors, with the Sun Journal second, and a tie for third place between The Enterprise of Brockton, Mass., and The Day of New London, Conn.

The other Maine newspapers receiving general excellence honors in the New England contest were the Ellsworth American of Ellsworth, a third place in the Weekly Class 2 division (more than 6,000 circulation) and the Mount Desert Islander of Bar Harbor, a second place in the Weekly Class 1 division (up to 6,000).
