LEWISTON — Warren C. Carkin, 91, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, Feb. 22, at Russell Park Rehab and Living, 158 Russell St., Lewiston.

Warren was born March 21, 1921, in Amherst , N.H., he was one of five brothers and three sisters of Robert Clement Carkin and Beulah Hope Carkin.

Warren grew up in North Woodstock, N.H., and attended North Woodstock High School, graduating in 1939. Warren joined the Navy in 1942 and fought in World War II until 1945. He served aboard the USS Massachusetts (battleship) , USS Bradford (destroyer) and USS Blount (transport).

Warren had a life-long career working for the Boston and Maine Railroad as well as the Maine Central Railroad. He married Florence Howland (of North Woodstock) March 9, 1949. Florence and Warren lived for a short time in New Hampshire, then moved to South Windham, where he began and ended his career as a Maine Central Railroad station agent. The family home was on the Gray Road in South Windham and the railroad station only a short distance away.

After retirement, several homes were purchased with their last home located in Lewiston. Later Florence and Warren traveled extensively through the U.S., Canada and Europe. In addition to lengthy trips, they also enjoyed day trips and get-aways to northern Maine, Vermont and Canada; just on a whim!

Warren and Florence enjoyed going to family reunions and playing cards with family members. Florence and Warren enjoyed being in the out-of-doors such as camping, fishing, berry and apple picking and walking were part of their daily routine. Taking drives to both known and unknown locations, to enjoy nature’s beauty and find a new place to eat were regular events. They loved their independence!

While living on the Gray Road in South Windham, Warren and Florence raised and sold Airedale puppies. For several years, Warren was an active member of the local Masonic Lodge. For a part time job Warren sold horse racing tickets at Gorham and Scarborough Downs race tracks as well as numerous fairs.

Through their later years both enjoyed the company of Black Labs. Warren also immensely enjoyed going for airplane rides in a Cessna out of Twitchell’s Airport with his pilot son, Clayton.

Survivors, include his wife of 64 years, Florence; his son and wife, Clayton and Joye; sisters, Muriel Cox, Anna Ford and Bernice Goodwin; as well as the many nieces and nephews.

Warren was predeceased by his parents, Robert, 1894 to 1964 and Beulah, 1899 to 1981; and his brothers, Frank, Gordon, Loren and Robert.

His son and daughter-in-law wished to thank the wonderful health care workers at Russell Park in Lewiston. They would also like to thank Cynthia Robbins for her help and support over the past year.
