LIVERMORE FALLS — A special town meeting will be held Monday for voters to consider withdrawing $80,000 from the town’s undesignated fund balance to cover an overdraft in the Sewer Department.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. March 4 at the Town Office.

The Sewer Department owes $80,000 to the Livermore Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The town’s undesignated fund contains $1.12 million, as of the board’s meeting on Feb. 4. If voters agree to transfer the $80,000, it will leave about $1.04 million, Town Manager Kristal Flagg previously said.

Those in Livermore Falls who use the sewer system pay for the Sewer Department and treatment plant. Jay contributes to the sewer plant operation and maintenance based on how much wastewater from Jay residents is treated at the plant. The formula is currently 54 percent for Jay and 46 percent for Livermore Falls.

The Livermore Falls sewer system serves the downtown and the outskirts of the in-town area. The remainder of residences are on private septic systems.

The way the warrant article is written would allow voters to reduce the amount to be transferred, but not to increase it, Board of Selectmen Chairman Bill Demaray said last month.

The $80,000 is expected to help pay for a new bar rack/screen at the treatment plant. The current equipment is not working well, if at all, town representatives have previously said.

The money would also help get the Sewer Department back on track. Selectmen, in their capacity as sewer trustees, increased rates by 20 percent in late November 2012, which is also expected to help out.
