A letter from George Ruby of Lisbon (March 7) about eliminating career politicians related very much to the feelings and thoughts that I have had for at least the past decade.
The idea of using term limits has been tossed around as of late, and I believe it is needed now, more than ever.
Although it isn’t the case now, years ago, anyone who worked in government service had to retire by age 70. Right now in the Senate and House, there are some who are in their 80s. Along with their age, they have a lot of influence in either guiding or misguiding the new crop of politicians.
Supposedly, the public is their employer, yet the public doesn’t have the power to fire or release any of them. A recall petition would have to be initiated, similar to the one used recently in Peru. Or, better yet, term limits.
Representatives talk about limiting or decreasing the public’s pensions, but I would swap mine with any one of theirs and save thousands of dollars a year on health care (plus, probably at least double my pension).
If members of Congress really want to help the economy, they could reduce the prices of gas and fuel oil (everything is transported by trucking companies and that causes the prices to escalate). Of course, with so many members of Congress having oil industry lobbyists stuff their pockets, it will never happen.
