NORWAY — The third of five storefronts in the historic Opera House has been rented.
Dennis Gray of the Norway Opera House Corp. said the space at 402 Main St. is being leased by Scott Berk, owner of Cafe Nomad at 450 Main St., and Kim Hamlin, head chef at the cafe and a knitter.
In addition to owning Cafe Nomad since 2007, Berk has been a member of Norway Downtown since 2009 and the Norway Opera House Corp. since 2010.
The pair purchased the contents of Artful Hands Fiber Studio, formerly at 316 Main St., and will use the inventory to establish a new fiber business. Coupled with Berk’s existing retail wine business, the venture will open as Fiber & Vine later this spring.
“That’s three out of the five and we’re still looking for the other two,” Gray said.
The space is between Gatherings and The Raven Collections.
“I’m really excited,” Hamlin said. She hopes to provide knitting products, yarns, fiber-related crafts, crochet items and classes.
In March, two stores opened up in the Norway Opera House, ending a five-year vacancy in the 1894 showpiece in the downtown business district.
The Raven Collections opened at 406 Main St., featuring gems from around the world, rocks, mineral specimens, crystals, fossils, jewelry and a few surprises, such as miniature,18th century metal carriages from China.
Gatherings, which specializes in antiques, vintage and used furniture, home décor and gifts, opened in the former Colonial Coffee Shoppe space.
Contractors began working on the storefronts in September 2012 as part of a $1 million renovation by the Norway Opera House Corp.
The three-story brick edifice is the centerpiece of the downtown National Historic District. It was once the center of community activities, but has been vacant since a partial roof collapse in September 2007. The town took ownership of it in 2011 due to its unsafe condition and turned it over to the Norway Opera House Corp. last year.
