LEWISTON — A 15-year-old local boy was headed for a juvenile detention center Friday night after being charged with stealing a van from Russell Street and taking it for a ride.

Police went to the area of Pettingill Street at about 6:30 p.m. after it was reported a silver Toyota Sienna had been taken from a yard.

The boy was first seen riding up Pettingill Street, headed for College Street. Several police officers went to the area, following the van as it reversed direction and headed toward Main Street. After traveling briefly on Main, the driver took a right onto King Avenue and a short time later, pulled onto the edge of a lawn and stopped.

Police said the boy struck at least one traffic sign before his joyride came to an end, roughly five minutes after it began.

The boy, who was not identified, was charged with driving without a license, driving to endanger and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He was being taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland on Friday night.
