LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen unanimously voted Monday to donate the funds to cover the town’s share of liability insurance so that the annual Memorial Day Parade can go on.
The town’s own insurance would not cover a parade unless it was held on the town’s property, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said.
The Memorial Day Parade starts in Jay and finishes in Livermore Falls, making stops along the way at different war memorials.
An insurance rider to cover bystanders and volunteers would cost an organization $600, Flagg said. The town could not buy a rider for the event.
“Our insurance does not allow us to do that,” she said.
The American Legion’s insurance only covers its members and the Legion does not have the funds to buy the rider on its own, Flagg said.
“It is short notice, but we are looking at not having a parade if there is no insurance,” she said.
Resident Pat Knowlton said there had to be a parade to remember veterans.
“We can’t not have a parade,” Flagg said.
Knowlton and her husband, Wayne Knowlton, said they planned to approach the other two towns in the tri-town area: Jay and Livermore.
Selectmen Chairman Bill Demaray motioned that the town pay its share of the insurance cost out of the recreation account. He also told the Knowltons to come back if they do not get the remainder of the money.
In other business, selectmen voted to accept a bid from $4,360 from Atlantic Construction Services of Auburn to remove asbestos from a town-owned property at 2 Gagnon St. The company was the low bidder of two bids. The other bid was $5,900 from Environmental Services Inc. of Livermore.
The money for the removal will come out of the $25,000 voters agreed to transfer from the undesignated fund to demolish the building. The town foreclosed on the property for $4,071.59 in back taxes and sewer fees several years ago.
Flagg also notified selectmen that the cost of diesel fuel and heating oil have each risen one cent per gallon from the current prices in the bids for the 2013-14 year. The town partners with other towns and school systems to get the best bid price.
Next year’s costs from Winthrop Fuel are $3.12 a gallon for diesel and $3.149 per gallon for heating oil, she said.
