AUBURN — Jon Simpson’s sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning helped bring home Brandon Knapp with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Edward Little shook off Brewer, 6-5, in a baseball game Tuesday.

The Red Eddies were down 5-1 in the seven inning when Evan Raymond slapped a two-run single. EL went on to score four runs in the inning to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Knapp got on base with a single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Simpson bunted, but an overthrown ball to first base allowed Knapp, who had two hits, one RBI and scored two runs, to come home with the winning run.

Brewer pitcher Ben Pushard was throwing a no-hitter before EL’s bats came to life in the seventh inning. Mike Hammond relieved Simpson on the mound and got win for the Red Eddies (3-7).

For Brewer, Evan Riva, Pushard and Logan Rogerson all had two hits.

Edward Little 19, Lincoln Academy 7

NEWCASTLE — Taylor Landry threw in seven goals and Hannah Johnston followed up with five as Edward Little built a 10-4 lead at halftime and went to beat Lincoln Academy, 19-6, in a girls’ lacrosse game Tuesday.

Kara Tancrel and Shelby Russel each scored three goals, Delia Demers had one, and Kate Sawyer collected three assists for the Red Eddies (3-5).

Laura Otterbeen, Katie Riley and Tess Fields each scored two goals for the winless Eagles (0-8). EL goalie Julia Langevin got the win in net, making 10 saves.

Softball

Buckfield, Rangeley split

RANGELEY — Rangeley used a 16-hit attack to vanquish Buckfield, 16-4, in a Game 1 of a softball doubleheader, but the Bucks had the final say in Game 2, beating the Lakers, 19-17, Tuesday afternoon.

In Game 1, the Lakers (4-2) coasted to an 11-2 lead by the third inning. Pitcher Taylor Esty got the win and was equally fierce at the plate, hammering out two singles and triple. Michaela Shorey had four singles and drove in four runs. Teammate Blayke Morin singled three times and tripled. Buckfield’s Arrabin Dunn doubled.

The Bucks got their act together in Game 2. Although Buckfied was outhit, 15-8, the Bucks made due with key hits from Dunn’s two doubles and a pair of singles by Ashley Campbell and Elizabeth Strout.

For the Lakers, Esty singled twice and doubled, driving in six runs. Morin had three hits and drove in three more runs. Madison Egan and Letarte each singled twice, and Abby Abbott belted a triple.

Softball

Brewer 7, Edward Little 0

AUBURN – Morgan Small hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs to lead unbeaten Brewer to a 7-0 win over Edward Little in KVAC softball Tuesday.

Emily Gilmore also had a pair of hits for the Witches (11-0). Pitcher Chelsea King blanked the Red Eddies (5-5) and held them to just five hits.

Emily Schario started for EL and was relieved by Molly Murray in the fifth.

College baseball

Maine 9, BC 7

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Shane Bussey had three hits, including his first career home run, to lead the University of Maine baseball team past Boston College 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Black Bears improve to 32-19 on the season, while Boston College falls to 11-38.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mike Connolly doubled to right field and scored when Colin Gay doubled down the left field line.

Maine added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning with three runs. Gay reached on a fielder’s choice and Sam Balzano reached on an error. Brendan Geary drew a walk to load the bases. Alex Calbick drove in Gay and Balzano with a single to center field. Geary scored the third run of the inning when Eric White hit a sacrifice fly.

University of Maine Hall of Fame

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine announced today that it has selected six former student-athletes for induction into the 2013 University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame. Former men’s basketball standout Francois Bouchard (1994), hockey star Jack Capuano (1989), track and field record holder Gerard LaFlamme, swimming standout Susan Herrick Lizzotte (1999), football player Carleton “Speed” Merritt (1924) and baseball All-American Chad White (1993) are the newest selections.

The six will be inducted on Friday, September 13, 2013. There will be a reception in the Hall of Fame lobby in the Memorial Gym beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner will follow at Wells Conference Center at 7 p.m. followed by the induction. The honorees will be recognized at halftime of the Maine football game against Bryant the following day.
