SOUTH PORTLAND — Nonesuch Books has announced that former United States Senator Olympia Snowe will appear at its Mill Creek store for a discussion and signing of her new book “Fighting for Common Ground” from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

After 18 years in the U.S. Senate, and a total of 40 years in Congress and the Maine legislature, Republican Senator Olympia Snowe announced that she would not seek a fourth term to the U.S. Senate. The public understood why: the two parties are so polarized they will not look for a solution between extremes, even when it’s clear that their own side cannot prevail. Congress’s approval-ratings have sunk to historic lows. The 112th Congress passed a record-low number of laws; the Senate failed to pass a budget in three consecutive years; the U.S. debt rating was lowered for the first time in our history — all because lawmakers could not work together.

In “Fighting for Common Ground,” the former Senator’s timely call to action, she asks: How did we get here? How did the world’s greatest legislative body devolve into partisanship and inaction? And how can we citizens influence our representatives to govern effectively once again?

This event is free to the public. Seating is limited, so come early for a seat. Plenty of free parking.
