WINTHROP — Daniel D. Mathews, 83, of Winthrop, passed away suddenly at his lakeside home on June 2.
He was born in Providence, R.I., March 8, 1930, to Joseph and Bernadina (Botelho) Mathews. He graduated from Providence schools, prior to joining the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served during the Korean War. He attended Bryant College, where he graduated in 1957 to start the first of his several businesses including MALCO INC. of Attleboro, Mass. and Pinetree Industries and Fabric Warehouse of Auburn. He was passionate about his work and continued to work daily at his Auburn store, with the help of his dedicated staff.
In 1953, he married Dorothy Norberg and soon thereafter moved to Westwood, Mass., where they raised their two daughters and resided for 23 years. In 1983, they moved to Winthrop to the shores of Narrows Pond, where they had spent summers since the 1950s.
Dan loved the outdoors and spent many hours on the water fishing on his boats both in Maine and later, during winter months, in the Florida Keys.
Throughout his life, Dan enjoyed skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain, playing tennis with friends and most recently playing golf at the Augusta Country Club, where he was a member. During the past 15 years, his two granddaughters brought him great joy, as he shared his enthusiasm for life with them.
Dan is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 59 years (together they were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary later this month); his daughter, Kim Mathews White and her husband, Dr. Raymond White, of Windham; daughter, Jennifer Mathews and her husband, Paul Rich and their two daughters, Lena Mathews Rich and Ryland Mathews Rich of Edgecomb; his sister, Birdie Angelone of Lincoln, R.I.; and nephews, Dennis and Steven Angelone and their families of North Scituate, R.I., and Lincoln, R.I.
