JAY — Selectmen want to know if residents prefer that the town continue to offer curbside trash and recycling pickup.
Residents voted overwhelmingly in 2010 to keep the service.
Board Chairman Steve McCourt asked selectmen Monday night whether they want to do a survey during the June 11 budget referendum or the November elections.
Discussion also involved doing a mailing to gauge residents’ opinion on the service.
Resident Al Landry asked why they wanted to ask residents about the service so soon after the purchase of a new truck. He also said people voted to keep roadside pickup a few years ago.
Town Manager Ruth Cushman said there have been many changes at the Transfer Station.
After Canton’s planned withdrawl by July 1, Jay will only be providing waste disposal services for two other towns. Those towns contract with Jay for residents to use the Jay facility. Initially, Jay’s facilities served 12 towns, she said.
Selectmen have been reviewing other towns’ services and have found that Jay is spending a lot more than others, Cushman said.
The budget for the department has been reduced dramatically over the past three years, Selectman Tom Goding said. He added that the truck is still in great shape and could be resold.
Revenue from that department has also decreased significantly.
Cushman said she and highway foreman John Johnson will put something together and present it to selectmen at a future meeting.
