1938 – 2013
BATH — Fred E. Kelley Jr., 74, of Sabattus, passed away June 5, at his home at Hillside House Assisted Living.
He was born in Lewiston July 3, 1938, the son of the late Fred and Myrtle (Jordan) Kelley.
Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving his country during the Vietnam War before retiring with his honorable discharge as a Senior Master Sergeant after 20 plus years of service. During those years, he earned his bachelor’s degree through the University of Maryland.
Fred was a very active member of the Kora Temple Shrine. He loved the great outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter who fished and hunted in many parts of the country, especially enjoying his time in Alaska. His love of the outdoors extended to teaching hunter safety classes wherever he was. He enjoyed reading and learning about war history and particularly enjoyed sharing this knowledge with his children and later on with his grandchildren, with whom he treasured the time he spent with them and always had treats for them at their sporting events or at his house.
Fred is survived by his five children, Kathy Morris of Colorado, Shawn Kelley and wife, Sandra, of New Mexico, David Ross and wife, Carrie, of Idaho, Kelly Eckerman and husband, Randy, of Oregon and Kathy Wessel of Idaho; 11 grandchildren, Joshua, Jeffrey, Owen, Sydney, Dillon, Delaney, Andrew, Devin, Amy, Nicole and Erica; and several cousins.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Nancy.
