SUMMERTIME CONFIDENCE: Labor Department data show U.S. employers added more than 200,000 payroll jobs in July, the most since April. The unemployment rate remained at 5 percent.

INDUSTRYWIDE GAINS: Health care, retail, financial services and construction reported big gains. Factory jobs, however, fell.

EXTRA PAY: Employers reported a 0.4 percent rise in average hourly earnings, the largest increase in a year.
