WILTON — Wilton Free Public Library’s summer reading program, “Bee A Bookworm,” will run June 26 through Aug. 1.

Children will set three reading goals for themselves and attend events and activities that are all about bugs. The program opens at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, with a concert by Judy Pancoast, a New England children’s singer/songwriter, at Academy Hill School.

Tuesday mornings will consist of a 10:30 story-time at the library. Picture books will be read by community leaders including Rep. Tom Saviello, Rep. Russell Black, Police Chief Heidi Wilcox, Town Manager Rhonda Irish and selectman Tiffany Maiuri. Some of these story-times will be ASL interpreted; pick up a calendar at the library for specific dates.

On Thursday, July 11, at 6 pm, the Chewonki Foundation will present their Bugmobile. See some creepy crawlies you may not typically see and learn a little something about them.

Wednesdays and Thursdays will include activities at Kineowatha Park. These activities will be crafts and/or games. They will take place at 12:30 each Wednesday and Thursday in conjunction with the Summer Lunch Program happening at the park. On Wednesday, July 17, Magical Michael will put on a magic show for the children instead of the normal games and crafts. Raylene Hunt will also be taking children on a Bug Safari on July 25. Pick up a calendar to see some of the extra activities happening later in the day at Kineowatha as well.

On Fridays at 1 p.m. there will be craft times/workshops at the library. These will include crafts, stories and activites about different types of bugs with Cassie, Mary Ryan and Russell Black. The exception is Friday, July 12. On that day, feel free to come to Bass Park for storytime and painting at 10:30 and bring a picnic lunch for after.

The program will close on Thursday, Aug. 1, with a movie night at the library. We will be showing Disney’s “A Bug’s Life” on the big screen on the adult floor. This will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a snack to share.

Although children do not need to set reading goals to participate in the other events it is certainly encouraged. Participants are also asked to come in to pick up a calendar and register. Prizes are offered for those who meet their summer reading goals. For more information, contact Cassie Savage at the library at 645-4831 or [email protected].
