LEWISTON — Dorothy Louise Annis Andrews, 89, of Auburn, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, June 19.
She was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Auburn, the daughter of Willis Augustus and Edith Norton Annis. She grew up on Gammon Avenue in Auburn and when she married Kenneth Andrews, also of Auburn, they built a home across the street from her childhood home and spent the next 57 years there, living a total of 77 years on one street.
Dot met her future husband when they were both members of the Methodist Church Epworth League, an organization for young adults. She wrote letters to him when he was a soldier in Europe during World War II and as she served as an assistant chief observer at “Sharp Lookout” on Goff Hill, watching for possible enemy aircraft piercing the skies over the Twin Cities as a member of the Ground Observer Corps of the U.S. Army Air Force. They were married in August 1946.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Auburn, and worked in the church nursery while her children were young. After her retirement from more than 25 years at the Maine Employment Security Commission in Lewiston, she became involved in preparing the Beacon, the church newsletter, worked with Community Concepts on heating assistance programs, and volunteered on Red Cross blood drives for years.
She enjoyed a lifetime of getting together with the EL ‘girls of ‘41’ for luncheons at Rolandeau’s and traveling to California to visit with her beloved extended family. Dot loved to read and write poetry her whole life, was a wiz at crossword and jigsaw puzzles, created beautiful sweaters, counted cross stitch and anything that involved her hands.
One of her great joys was to watch her grandchildren playing in the water and the beloved family camp at Bear Pond in Turner. Ken and his brother Wes built the camp and it continues to give the entire family great joy.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Tom Pulkkinen of East Boothbay; a son, Kenneth Willis Andrews of Falmouth, Mass.; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Bill Woodward of Monmouth; granddaughter and her husband, Wendy and Jeff Loomis, of Seattle, Wash.; grandson, Kenneth Scott Andrews of Portland; granddaughter and her husband, Karen and Jim McKenney, of Monmouth; granddaughter and her husband, Kaylene and Steve Jablecki, of Falmouth, Mass.; grandson, and his wife, Tim and Holly Warnock Beaucage, of Winthrop; great-grandchildren, Sierra and Jared Talbot and Shawn, Malia and Kasia Jablecki of Falmouth, Mass., and Zachery and Seth McKenney of Monmouth; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Eddie Barker of Auburn.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth William Andrews; a grandson, Mark Peter Pulkkinen; and a sister, Helen Clair Pierce.
