BRIDGTON — Help protect the natural resources and rural character of the Western Maine area by registering for the 2013 Loon Echo Trek scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, at Shawnee Peak Ski Area.
This 13th annual benefit for Loon Echo Land Trust attracts hundreds of people from across New England and offers something for everyone. Choose between a 25-, 50- or 100-mile bicycle trek through breathtaking farm fields, lakes and mountains or enjoy a six-mile hike across the ridge of Pleasant Mountain with gourmet rest stops along the way.
Both the very popular “taste trek”, where hikers are spoiled by gourmet rest stops along their trek, and the finishers “nest” where trekkers are treated to free beer, massages and a barbecue meal will once again be part of the event.
Loon Echo Land Trust protects more than 5,000 acres of land in the northern Sebago Lake region. Executive Director Carrie Walia says, “The Trek funds a significant portion of our annual operating budget, which allows us to steward lands under protection, like Pleasant Mountain, and act on new land projects such as the exciting 1600-acre Perley Mills Community Forest.”
While fundraising is optional, participants are encouraged to raise additional funds for the Land Trust with peak fundraising prizes. This year, people who raise $500 or more will earn a free Loon Echo Trek jersey, with higher prizes including ski passes and bed and breakfast weekends donated by local businesses.
Registration is open. Both novice and experienced recreationalists are encouraged to sign up for the “early bird special” before July 1. For more information, visit www.loonechotrek.org. Volunteers are also needed and are encouraged to email [email protected] or call 207-647-4352.
