1928 – 2013

LEWISTON — James E. Murphy Sr., 84, a resident of Murphy Lane, Jay, died Thursday, June 20, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 29, 1928, in Warsaw, Ind., the son of Orval H. Murphy and Mary Lucille (Stigerwalt) Murphy Lord. He attended school in Pennsylvania and later in Maine, after moving here in 1939 and making his permanent residence in Jay in 1945.

James served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1950. On June 20, 1948, in Jay, he married Pearl E. Levesque.

Jim worked for Jay School System from 1968 to 1976 and Bass Shoe in Wilton, retiring in 1991. Following retirement, he worked at Walmart for 8 years and also repaired E-Z-Go golf carts. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cribbage.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Douglass and her husband, Jerry, of Lisbon; two sons, Hale Murphy and his wife, Donna, of Centreville, Ala., and James Murphy Jr. and his wife, Rachel, of Jay; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and his sister, Corrinne Amos and her husband, Lyle, of Jay.

He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Murphy, March 8, 2005; and his grandson, Christopher Douglass, May 31, 2008.
