TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) – A moderate earthquake struck Sunday morning several miles north of Lake Tahoe, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The magnitude-4.8 quake was centered about 8 miles east of Truckee.

A Nevada County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher said there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries from the quake, felt 100 miles away in Sacramento.

“It was just one big thump. Everything shook but nothing fell off the shelves,” said Tina Stull, who owns the Glenshire General Store in Truckee. “It was just a big, strong jolt. We had a lot of scared people. Everybody just sort of froze.”

Californians have had a string of significant earthquakes this month after several years of relative seismic calm. But seismologists say clusters of quakes do not necessarily mean the Big One is coming.
