NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — Thomas A. Stanley, 68, of Kirkland, Wash., and Spring Lake, N.J., died on Thursday, Aug. 1, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, after a brief illness.

He was born on June 29, 1945, in Montclair, N.J., and lived in East Orange, Short Hills and Berkley Heights, N.J., before moving to Kirkland, Wash., 17 years ago. He was a graduate of St. Benedict Prep in Newark, N.J.

Thomas was a self-employed building contractor. He owned Knollwood Construction in Berkley Heights, N.J., and Kirkland, Wash., for many years, before retiring 10 years ago. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an active volunteer at Holy Family Church in Kirkland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Susan Dumais, formerly of Lewiston; his children, Christine Preston and her husband, Michael, and Samantha Elliott and her husband, Matthew; his brothers and sisters, Paul, Peter, John, Jerome, Barbara Fritts, Suzanne McCarthy and Rosemary Carrara; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Kathryn Stanley; and his granddaughter, Kathryn Preston.
