1924 -2013

AUBURN — Antonio “Tony” J. Grondin, 89, a former resident of Jay, died Saturday, Aug. 10, at Clover Manor Health Care, where he had resided for the past two years.

He was born March 30, 1924, in Livermore Falls, the son of Joseph and Florida (Chouinard) Grondin. He attended school in Livermore Falls. On Oct. 18, 1947, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, he married his wife of 54 years, Mary DeSoto of Livermore Falls. She passed away Feb. 8, 2002.

Tony worked driving a school bus and loved the kids and doing things to make them laugh. He later went to work at Livermore Shoe and Bass Shoe in Wilton, retiring from Bass in 1986. Following his retirement, he started working with his wife, Mary, at Livermore Falls Trust Co. in Livermore Falls, where she worked as a custodian.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and going to the horse races. For several years he and Mary loved spending the summers at Powder Horn in Old Orchard, where he was known as the candy man. The children would seek him out, knowing he always had candy with him and that he loved to share with the kids.

After Mary’s passing, Tony moved to Turner and lived with his daughter, Kay and her husband, Tony, for several years prior to going to Clover Manor. He loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren; he was always interested in what was going on with everyone and their families. He will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved him.
