PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Edith O. (Wood) Whitney, 93, of New Castle, N.H., passed away Friday, Sept. 20, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born in Lewiston on March 27, 1920, the daughter of George H. and Violett E. Wood. Edith spent most of her early life in Oxford, with her grandmother, Harriet (Staples) Dorey. She attended Oxford public schools.
Edith married Percy T. Whitney of Oxford. Percy and Edith moved to Kittery, where they lived for 44 years. While in Kittery, she graduated from Armand’s Beauty Academy in Saco, after which she owned and operated the Chez-Moi Beauty Shop in Kittery. Edith and Percy moved to New Castle, N.H., in 1985.
Edith was a former member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Kittery. After moving to New Castle, N.H., she attended the New Castle Congregational Church. She learned to play golf at the York Country Club and later joined the Portsmouth Country Club in Greenland, N.H. She was one of Portsmouth Country Club’s longest-standing members.
Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Percy; her two daughters and their families, Cheryl Wyman and her companion, Arturo Cortina, of Barrington, N.H., Cheryl’s children, Tiffany Wyman-Stanton and her husband, James, of Mystic, Conn., Shannon Wyman Anctil and her husband, James, of Naugatuck, Conn.; and daughter, Ann Pilgrim and her husband, Mark, of Maine, Ann’s children, Brandt Pilgrim of Florida, Seth Pilgrim and his wife, Jodi, of Virginia and Egan Visker and her husband, Robert, of Connecticut; five great-grandchildren, Emma and Connor Pilgrim, Callista Anctil and Jameson and Harrison Stanton; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Dow of South Paris; and many nieces and nephews.
