Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed that several of the political stories have centered around young adults.

As a 22-year-old male, I believe that it’s time the public hear about how the policies up for discussion affect people in my age group.

One of the recent stories talked about how one of the state’s biggest issues is the aging population. Another was about Gov. LePage’s claim that expanding MaineCare as  part of the ACA will mostly benefit people in my age group whom he claims are more likely to engage in smoking and drinking.

There are, however, many people like myself (a Type I diabetic) who cannot survive in this state without the expansion.

The state of Maine cannot expect to improve its aging workforce by alienating the young with stereotypes and a lack of compassion for those of us who are young, ill, and yet still motivated to do our part in the workforce.

I will soon be leaving for a state where my tax dollars will be spent on my health care as I am sure many others will. I hope the politicians in Augusta listen to constituents like myself before the majority of residents become retirees.
