PARIS — The Board of Selectmen has approved a rental agreement for the community room in the Paris Fire Department that calls for a $50 deposit to cover damage.

Fire Chief Brad Frost told selectmen at their Sept. 23 meeting that the room had sustained property damage during a rental.

“The amount charged doesn’t deter it,” he said.

Most recently, Frost said a $1,200 wireless projector system purchased through a grant was damaged and will have to be replaced.

“We have a picture of the person on the stepladder, playing with it,” he said. Restitution from the person will be sought, he said.

Town Manager Amy Bernard said this is not the first time there’s been damage to the room.

It is now fully videotaped, and all the electronics are locked up so if there is any damage, town officials will be able to automatically see what happened — and who did it.

The rental agreement must now be signed by each renter prior to reserving the room. The agreement will specify that the renter is responsible for any damage that occurs while they occupy the room.

Rental agreements for public spaces vary from town to town. In Norway, Town Clerk Shirley Boyce said the community room in the Town Office is available for rental, but the town does not charge a deposit because there have been no major issues caused by renters.
