SHELBY, N.Y. (AP) – A 17-year-old boy fell through the ice and died while trying to rescue his dog from a frozen creek Friday.

John Barrett’s body was recovered about six hours after a relative saw him fall into Oak Orchard Creek in the Orleans County town of Shelby while out for a morning walk. The boy was trying to reach his dog after it fell through the ice.

Dive crews spent hours breaking through the ice in search of the boy before finding his body about 25 yards from where he entered the water.

The dog’s body also was recovered.

Barrett was a junior at Medina High School.
