WEST PARIS — Permits for two scrap metal businesses were approved by selectmen during their meeting Oct. 24.
The town requires the businesses, West Paris Metals and Mason Restoration and Auto Parts, to apply for automobile graveyard/junkyard permits annually.
On Monday, Town Manager John White said selectmen, the fire chief and code enforcement officer toured the junkyards before approving the permits.
At a public hearing earlier this month, two neighbors of West Paris Metals on Maple Street voiced concern about safety threats posed by the yard, which is owned by Ernie Yap.
A serious fire tore through Yap’s business in August, torching 41 junked vehicles stacked in the yard’s west end. Following the fire, selectmen and fire Chief Norm St. Pierre required Yap to conform to a set of safety guidelines to help prevent similar incidents.
At the public hearing two weeks ago, Board Chairman Dennis Henderson said repeated inspections by St. Pierre and selectmen showed Yap was complying with the town’s safety requirements.
