1931 – 2013
LEWISTON — Alice Elaine (Henderson) Hart, 82, of South Portland, died peacefully, with family by her side, at Central Maine Medical Center on Sunday, Dec. 22.
Alice was born in Portland on Nov. 3, 1931, the daughter of Edgar and Esther K. (Larsen) Henderson. She graduated from Portland High School and married her loving husband, Elliot “Gene” Hart, on Aug. 4, 1951. They were married for 58 years, during which time they lived in Portland, California and South Portland.
After Alice graduated from high school, she worked for E. Corey’s Hardware. When her children were young, Alice enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom. Later, she was employed by Unum in Portland, where she worked as an administrative assistant for 20 years.
Through the years, she was an active member of Elm Street United Methodist Church in South Portland; she sang alto in the choir and was a member of Thalia Circle, the United Methodist Women and the Methodist Adult Club. She was also in the church talent shows and worked during bean suppers.
Alice loved traveling with her husband and they especially enjoyed trips to visit their son in Vancouver, Wash. They had a special love for Bug Light Park and would go their almost daily.
In her later years, Alice volunteered as secretary for the city of South Portland/Cape Elizabeth TRIAD for seven years, a program designed to enhance the quality of life and safety of seniors. She was a great contributor to the program and enjoyed the friends she met there.
Alice loved playing games. Along with many friends, she enjoyed playing bingo weekly at the South Portland Community Center. Whether it was playing Scrabble, cribbage online or games at family events, she gave you a run for your money. She was a wiz at crossword puzzles and any type of word puzzle. She enjoyed her computer and communicating via email with many friends. Since she was a teen, she had two pen pals whom she communicated with her entire life from England and New Jersey.
Alice is survived by two children, Diane (Hart) Doak and husband, Paul, of Poland Spring and Michael Hart of Vancouver, Wash.; one granddaughter, Melissa Doak and partner, Adam Bellemare, of Windsor; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elliot “Gene” Hart; and siblings, Ruth Bergeron, Eleanor White, Millie Davis, Richard Henderson and Edgar Henderson Jr.
