BETHEL — Juniors at Telstar Regional High School will spend a week in March learning about careers by job shadowing.

Career Week, March 17-21, benefits students in a number of ways, Dean of Students Charlie Raymond said. Students can discover what they do or don’t want to pursue after high school, and they often get summer jobs as a result of the program.

In past years, students have followed local business people, or those out of state or out of the country, he said. Among the careers explored have been flight attendants, marine biologists, sports broadcasters and studio recorders.

Last year, student Eric Lowell rode with a Maine State Police Trooper and his dog,  and visited the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro where he worked with recruits and troopers training dogs.

Lowell, who is a senior, said he wanted to go into law enforcement and his Career Week experience reinforced that. He plans to attend a four-year college in the fall and pursue a law enforcement career.

Raymond said his daughter was interested in some kind of social work and her week of job shadowing in high school confirmed it. She is now a social worker, he said.

Raymond said at least one student who thought she really wanted to be a marine biologist thought differently after discovering part of the job involves cleaning concrete tanks.

Austin Ryerson followed a relative who is a funeral director and although he learned much that he didn’t know about the job, he has decided to study civil engineering when he attends college in the fall.
