Lawrence ‘Sully’ Greenwood
1918 – 2009

FARMINGTON — Lawrence S. “Sully” Greenwood of Farmington passed away on Aug. 22, at his home.

He was born in Hallowell, April 10, 1918, to Lester Clyde and Nora Shatford Greenwood. He attended grammar school in Wiscasset. He lived on Mount Washington when his father managed the hotel there.

Returning to Farmington, he lived with Chester and Isabel Greenwood through his high school years and graduated from Farmington High School in 1936. He was later drafted into the U.S. Army and served on the front line in World War II under General George Patten. He was injured and received the Purple Heart.

He married Inez Gilman and they had four children. She passed away in 1982. Later he married Dorothy Templeton of Palermo, who passed away in 1998. He then moved back to his home town of Farmington. He was a building contractor in Farmington for many years and he built more than 100 homes in the area including creating the street off Maple Avenue called Sunset Avenue and building all the homes there. He and his family lived there for many years.

He is survived by his sons, Larry G. Greenwood of Old Orchard Beach and Ronald L. Greenwood and his fiancée, Patricia Gordon, of Temple; his daughters, Gayle A. Shardlow and her husband, John, of East Wilton and Loretta G. Dyer and her fiancé, Ralph Davis, of Yarmouth; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ruby Greenwood; and his brother-in-law, Boyd Hempen.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Russell S. Greenwood; two sisters, Dorothy Deschene and Barbara Hempen; and two brothers, Lester Greenwood and Chester Greenwood II.
