1917 – 2014

AUBURN — Wilfred A. Cloutier, 96, of Lewiston, died Wednesday, May 28, at the Hospice House, after a long illness with heart disease.

He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 18, 1917, the son of the late Calixte and Octavie Marcotte Cloutier. He was educated in Lewiston and Sabattus schools. Wilfred married the love of his life, Lucienne Marcotte, on Dec. 18, 1937, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Sabattus.

He was well-known to his relatives and friends as “Uncle Happy.” He served his country from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Marine Corps; he served in Guam and Iwo Jima. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Citation and Pacific Theater Medal.

After the war, he worked in the textile industry for a few years and then 30 years as a pipe-fitter at Bath Iron Works, from which he retired in 1979. After retirement, he worked part time with his wife doing janitorial services for a few years.

He was an accomplished carpenter and built his own homes in his spare time. He loved reading, bowling and especially dancing.

He leaves his wife of 76 years, Lucienne, of Lewiston, and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents.
