Mertice Barker

BRIDGTON — Mertice Barker, 92, of Stoneham died Monday, Aug. 24, at Bridgton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in South Parsonsfield, May 23, 1917, the third child of Harold and Florence Day Berry. She attended school in East Parsonsfield and graduated from Cornish High School and Gorham Normal School. She was an elementary teacher in North Lovell and Stoneham, and in Lovell village at the Annie Heald and New Suncook schools.
On Aug. 1, 1943, she married Carlton Barker Jr. She was a member of the East Stoneham Congregational Church, the Ladies Circle, and Pythian Sisters. She lived a frugal life but was generous with family and friends. She leaves her husband of 66 years; three sons, Timothy of Charlotte, N.C., Danny and his wife, Geneva, of Stoneham and Thomas and his wife, Nora, of Stoneham; a daughter, Andrea Fillebrown and her husband, Gus, of Stoneham; five grandchildren, Faith, Joel, Hope, Travis and Jacob; two older sisters, Dorothy Berry and Kathleen Casey, both of New Gloucester; and two younger brothers, Coleman Berry of Athol, Mass., and Freedom Barry of Cambria, Calif.
