LIVERMORE FALLS — “Book A Trip” World Tour is the 2014 Summer Reading Program theme at Treat Memorial Library. Registration is open to children of all ages and runs Tuesday, June 17, through Saturday, June 28. The world tour will begin on Thursday, June 19.
At that time travelers will be issued a passport (reading log), itinerary, map, ticket (bookmark) for the first continent and a voucher for a ticket to a Seadogs baseball game.
Because the program has seven weeks to cover the entire globe, it will be done continent by continent. First stop will be North America at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 19. Ports of call will occur at 6 p.m. Thursdays with the exception of July 3.
Children should bring their passport each week to have it stamped and stickered as they go through Customs. Staff hopes to fit in samples/examples of music/songs, languages, animals, food, stories and crafts from as many countries on each continent as time permits.
The Chewonki Foundation will bring the Batmobile at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, for their program, “Bats of the World.” Staff will encourage travelers to share their knowledge of the different continents, and posters will list what is shared.
The program is made possible by the fundraising for the Elaine Smith Summer Reading Program, the library trustees, staff, volunteers and the people who participated. The 50/50 raffle was won by Terry Norris.
Wednesday’s Preschool Story Time and Saturday’s Family Story Time will go on hiatus for the summer. Both will return next September.
Adult readers will have a summer project, too. Established in 2013 by the Maine State Library, the Maine Readers’ Choice Award is given to the winning book chosen by the public.
The selection committee has narrowed the field from 140 works to four titles. Treat has three of the four: “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt, “Benediction” by Kent Haruf and “Transatlantic” by Colum McCann. The fourth, “The Golem and the Jinni” by Helene Wecker, has been ordered.
During the first two weeks of September, readers will vote for their favorite at the library or on the Maine Readers Choice Award website: www.mainereaderschoiceaward.org.
The Elsie’s Re-Read Used Book Emporium has regular hours: Tuesday 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12:30 to 3 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations continue to arrive.
