STRONG — Selectmen on Tuesday accepted a $3,500 bid from Thorndike and Sons Inc. for the foreclosed property on the West Freeman Road, just beyond the intersection with North Main Street.

From that amount, they will recoup approximately $3,000 for legal fees, unpaid taxes and advertising costs. Any remaining funds will go into the general fund. It was the only bid received for the property.

Selectmen agreed to readvertise other foreclosed properties.

Board Chairman Jim Burrill presented a recycling contract with Archie’s Inc., a Mexico-based waste transport company. The company will provide a roll-off container for town recyclables, and the town will pay $1,400 per year for the service.

Siting the container could be a problem, he said. The town has a recycling ordinance and a goal of getting residents to recycle 50 percent of their waste. The town closed its landfill and declined the option to continue to use the land on Burbank Hill for either recycling and or as a transfer station.

Burrill said the 9 percent participation in the recycling effort was far from the goal. If private trash haulers refuse to recycle for their customers, the bags go into a landfill. The only other option is the long drive to Farmington.

“People have access to the recycling center at Farmington for no charge,” Burrill said.

Selectmen agreed to consider potential locations for the recycling container before their next meeting.

Selectmen also agreed to set up a meeting with Mike Rogers, supervisor for Maine Revenue Services’ municipal department. Rogers met with selectmen in the past to discuss ways to collect personal property taxes fairly.

Selectmen agreed to review options for the local ATV club to have access to the Strong section of the Black Fly Loop.
