This will be the first of three summer concerts leading up to the official North Church Concert Series on Sept. 30, with the world-famous Tannahill Weavers.

Mickey and Liam Spain are second-generation performers from the mill town of Manchester, N.H. Learning folk songs at the knee of their singer-songwriter father, Mike Spain, the brothers took that musical education and began performing Irish and American folk songs as a duo, up and down the east coast, recording two CDs along the way.

One evening in 1997, while performing in Dover, N.H, the Spain brothers met another set of brothers, Shane, Conor and Rory Makem, sons of the legendary Tommy Makem. The two sets of brothers, realizing a mutual respect and appreciation for folk songs, immediately formed a friendship. In 2002, that friendship led to the two sets of brothers combining forces to form the Irish super group, The Makem and Spain Brothers.

The band of brothers began headlining acts across the United States, Canada and Ireland as well as recording four CDs. In 2010, Shane Makem decided to leave the band, followed by his brother Conor in 2013. The remaining brothers continue to tour as Makem and Spain, and are expecting to release their latest recording project, a collaboration with folk icons such as Tom Paxton, Noel Paul Stookey, Dave Mallett, Bill Staines, and a host of others, entitled “Sessions.”

In addition to touring with Makem and Spain, Mickey and Liam, keep busy performing and entertaining audiences of all sizes, with their collection of American, Irish and original folk songs as well as original children’s songs. They bring their talents to the stages of festivals and theaters, as well as to elementary schools, where they teach the students about folk music, and write and record original compositions with them.

Mickey, a brilliant singer and Liam, an exceptionally gifted musician, are both accomplished songwriters in the folk style and their work has been a prominent part in the success of The Makem and Spain Brothers.

North Church is at 118 High Street. Concert ticket price is $15. More information is available at www.necelticarts.com or call 207-778-2006. Public supper price is $10.
