1923 – 2014

HOLDEN, Mass. — Jane O. Moulton died Thursday, June 26, of lymphoma.

Ninety years and seven months ago, Jane was born in Rangeley. She was the first female assistant principal of a regional high school in Massachusetts, and prior to that she was the Department Head of Physical Education at Wachusett Regional High School. She also taught in Holden and Ware, Mass. During her career, she coached many championship basketball, field hockey, softball and tennis teams.

In 1944, she enlisted in the WAVES and played on the service basketball and softball teams. After basic training, she was stationed in New York City and responsible for an accounting unit which processed pay for Navy servicemen and women in the WWII European Theater of Operation.

Jane was an avid competitive golfer. She played on the Massachusetts Spring Gold Teams and in the Worcester County Golf Association. At aged 13, she shot 78. Jane was a member of Holden Hills in Holden, Mass., and Mingo Springs Golf Club in Rangeley.

Jane leaves her sisters-in-law, Rita Oakes of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Nancy Oakes of Holden, Mass.; nieces, Susan Ackor of Thomaston; Jennifer Oakes of South Burlington, Vt., and Amy Oakes of Sandwich, Mass.; nephews, Stephen Oakes of Manchester, N.H. and Jeffrey Oakes of Sandwich, Mass. She leaves several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews and her friend and caregiver, Jennefer Baxter of Holden, Mass.

Her parents, Susie Berdina Stewart and Vance Elden Oakes and brothers, Stewart Francis Oakes and James Elden Oakes predeceased her. Her husband, James Francis Moulton, one of the original 24 on the Manhattan Project, also predeceased her.

The family would like to thank the VNA, Holden Rehabilitation Center, and the doctors at Memorial and UMASS hospitals for their wonderful care and support.
