Written by Mindy Kaling (“The Office,” “The Mindy Project”) and Brenda Withers, “Matt & Ben” is the story of Hollywood best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, before J-Lo, before Gwyneth, before Oscar. When the screenplay for “Good Will Hunting” falls from the ceiling of Affleck’s apartment, the boys and their friendship are tested.
Starring Meghan McGuire as Damon and Samantha Menair as Affleck and directed by Sean McGuire, the producing group are all alumni of The Theater Project’s Young Company. McGuire, a graduate of St. Lawrence University, has been teaching, directing, and acting at The Theater Project since his return to Brunswick. McGuire and Menair have just completed their first years at Denison University and Ithaca College respectively. They are excited to be back in the welcoming atmosphere of The Theater Project, and thrilled to be given the chance to produce their own show.
“Sam and I decided to do this play in the fall of our first year at college” said McGuire. “I think we were both really missing The Theater Project and doing ridiculous things together. I had heard of the play from Mindy Kaling’s book, so I decided to read it. After the first scene, I just knew that it would be perfect for Sam and me. It was a story about best friends, and it was really funny. Plus, it was a comedy written especially for two women which was really refreshing and exciting. We both really wanted to be doing comedy, and this two person play gave us the perfect opportunity to do it together.”
“Matt & Ben” is on stage at The Theater Project on July 10, 11 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets by donation and only sold at the door (no advance reservations).
The Theater Project is at 14 School Street.
