LEWISTON — Lifetree Café will examine class warfare and living online in two upcoming programs.
Lifetree Café, which is based out of South Lewiston Baptist Church, 1919 Lisbon Road, is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting.
Societal class equality at home and abroad will be explored at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Lifetree Café, 1919 Lisbon Road.
The free, 60-minute program, titled “Class Warfare: The Unending Struggle for Equality,” features filmed interviews with three people who have personally seen and experienced India’s caste system.
“Westerners can change our destiny,” says Melanie Hutchinson, a U.S. born teacher serving in India. “In the caste system, you can’t. What you are born into is what you are. Your caste determines your job, who you marry, what you eat, and even how you dress.”
The consequences of living online will be explored at Lifetree Café during the program, “Living Online: Provocative Thoughts from the Author of ‘Is Google Making Us Stupid?’” at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, April 30.
The program features a filmed interview with Nick Carr, a 2011 Pulitzer finalist who frequently writes about technology and culture.
“This is a very strange moment in history,” Carr said. “People are socializing, looking at media, and being distracted from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed. I don’t think we fully know yet what the consequences of this shift will be.”
During the program, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the positive and negative impacts technology has had in their own lives and relationships.
Admission to the 60-minute events are free.
