RANGELEY — School Superintendent Susan Pratt began Tuesday’s school board meeting with a rundown of summer infrastructure improvements and ended the meeting by leading a walking tour of the campus.

“The soccer field renovation has begun,” Pratt said. “The old shed has been demolished, and the slab foundation for the new portable is ready to go and waiting for the building permit. And we’ve started adding color to the classrooms.”

The soccer field was excavated and that fill, as well as fill from the town’s street construction project, is being used to extend the school bus turnaround and the small field to the rear of the school.

There has been considerable interest from architects in the proposed school improvements. The Siemen’s energy upgrade project is laid out and is waiting for replies from banks to choose the best financing deal. The school will be grant partners with the Healthy Community Coalition for a portion of a larger grant that supports healthy eating, gardens and local foods.

One person expressed interest in the old portable classroom, but after inspecting underneath the structure offered to move it only if the school would pay for the move. Pratt suggested advertising outside the area and will also look into demolition costs if nobody can be found to take the building.

Charles Brown, the K-8 principal and athletic director, delivered a PowerPoint presentation in support of a trimester system for grades K–8, instead of the current quarter system. Brown said the trimester will better support a standards-based reporting system.

Proposing the trimester system to begin this fall, Brown projected Dec. 2, March 16 and June 10 as report-card dates. After brief discussion, the board approved the change with one dissenting vote.

Though the content for graduation standards has been set, Pratt listed six options for guiding principles to discuss at the next meeting. The six options have varying amounts of state supervision.

Brown is looking for local flat meadows for a temporary soccer field, as the school’s field must lie fallow for a year after replanting. He will meet with Rick Godaire of the Parks Commission to discuss logistics for using some space in town for home games.

The board approved Pratt’s nominations of five coaches — Davis Jensen for varsity boys’ soccer, Elden Smith for varsity girls’ soccer, Philip Oliveri for middle school boys’ soccer, Danielle Ellis for middle school girls’ soccer and Tim Straub for golf.

Outing Club sponsor Lucy Simonds was on hand to ask approval for the annual middle school trip to Tanglewood, a 4-H camp in Lincolnville, to focus on team-building, leadership and problem-solving skills. She also requested approval for an overnight camping trip this fall to a destination to be determined. The board unanimously approved both trips.
