FRYEBURG — A local man was arrested after he tried to elude police in his truck and then on foot after running into a Fryeburg police cruiser.
Marcus T. Buzzell, 21, of Fryeburg was arrested Wednesday night after turning himself in to the Fryeburg Police Department. He was charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a Class C felony; refusing to stop for a law enforcement officer, a Class E misdemeanor; criminal speed, a Class E misdemeanor; driving to endanger, a Class E misdemeanor, and various other traffic related infractions.
According to a statement issued by police, the incident began about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when officer Joshua Grzyb observed a white 2000 GMC pickup truck that failed to obey a stop sign on Route 5 near Indian Acres Camp on Main Street. The truck took off north on Route 5 after the suspect spun his wheels in front of the officer.
Police say Grzyb caught up with Buzzell after the suspect landed in a ditch along Route 5 at the intersection of Corn Shop Road. As the officer pulled his cruiser alongside Buzzell, the suspect accelerated his truck, spun from the ditch and struck the front end of the cruiser, causing what police said was extensive damage.
Buzzell then continued on Corn Shop Road and down a muddy field access road about three-quarters of a mile before abandoning the truck and fleeing on foot.
A State Police K-9 unit as well as additional Fryeburg officers, state troopers and Oxford County deputies assisted in the search for Buzzell. Police said the K-9 unit tracked the suspect for 3.75 miles toward the direction of Buzzell’s residence on West Fryeburg Road.
Police said shortly after the track ended, Buzzell turned himself in at the Fryeburg Police Department.
“Buzzell is cooperating with investigators,” acting Chief of Police Joshua Potvin said. “He stated that he ran because he didn’t want to get another ticket and thought he could get away.”
In January, Buzzell was arrested in Fryeburg for violation of a protective order.
“He does have some history of involvements with law enforcement and was known to the officer,” Potvin told the Sun Journal Thursday.
Buzzell is currently being held at the Oxford County Jail.
“I’m glad that this situation ended without anyone getting hurt, and Mr. Buzzell is taking responsibility for his actions,” Potvin said.
