PARIS — Raymond Joseph Gaudet was recently named Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans’ Home. He was born in Mexico, Maine, on Dec. 18, 1928, and grew up in Rumford and Mexico.

Gaudet entered the Army on May 7, 1951, and served in the Infantry Division in the 3rd Platoon of Company C, 1st Battalion. He was also in the 27th Infantry Regiment and the 25th Infantry Division.

Gaudet performed numerous patrols and helped out with evacuations, and he also did resupply of “A” & “L” companies.

He served in Sandbag Castle, Korea, from May 1951 to September 1953 during the Korean War and achieved the rank of Private E-1. He earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Gaudet worked as a truck driver hauling lumber and he was also a millwright in paper mills throughout Maine until he retired. This included many road trips throughout the state. Gaudet is proud of his millwright work.

He married and had four children: Raymond Richard, Patricia Ann, David Albert and Robert Michael. He also has four grandchildren: Virginia, Joseph, Chris and Brittany. Gaudet has many fond memories of spending time with his wife, Theresa, and their children at the beach.

He came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in April 2013. He enjoys dogs and cats and the music program here.
